Girl Scout Gold Award Plan sponored by Susan Eichhorn

General:

a. Five sessions
b. One hour each
c. Children between the ages of 6 and 12

Purpose: To combat the growing rate of obesity in our nation by teaching children easy healthy eating tips and simple exercises to keep their bodies moving. I hope to show kids the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle and the long-term effects of using my tips.

 

Session 1: Colorful Choices

a. Show a 15 minute Powerpoint about how to make a meal healthier by adding more colorful ingredients like fruits and vegetables and about healthy recipes.

b. Show the children pictures of unhealthy meals and ask them how they can make them healthier.

c. Play a game where the kids get split up into groups and each group is assigned a color. The team with the greatest number of healthy ingredients for their color wins.

d. Do one of the recipes with the children (fruit salad, ants on a log, etc.).

e. Give out handouts of the recipes.

Session 2: Reading Labels

a. Show a 15 minute Powerpoint about how to read labels and how not to be fooled by packaging.

b. Bring in boxes of popular packaged foods and have the kids decide if the food should be eaten or not.

c. Have the children work in teams and have them decide between two labels of the same product which product is better. The team with the most correct wins.

d. Give out a 5 minute questionnaire to see if the kids are using the tips from the previous week in their lives, what they like about the presentations, what they don't like, and what they would like to change.

Session 3: Portion Size

a. Show a 15 minute Powerpoint about portion control and nutrient balance.

b. Have the students make balanced meals using fake food and keeping in mind the quick tips I showed them that include using your hands to determine the appropriate portion.

c. Play a game with the kids that involve them working in teams to pick which meal is balanced. The team with the most correct wins.

d. Hand out a 5 minute questionnaire.

Session 4: Active Lifestyle

a. Show a 15 minute Powerpoint about easy exercises kids can do with friends and families and simple ways to keep their bodies moving.

b. Do some of the exercises with the kids and teach them the importance of staying hydrated while doing activities.

c. Split the children up into groups and have them come up with a new game that will keep their bodies moving. Then, the entire class will attempt to play the games.

d. Hand out a 5 minute questionnaire.

Session 5: Helping the Environment and Your Body

a. Show a 15 minute Powerpoint about going outside instead of using electronics and eating organic and locally grown foods.

b. Teach the children games that will promote the well-being of the environment while keeping their bodies moving.

c. Have kids try the organic/locally-grown and shipped version of foods to see if they can tell the difference.

d. Hand out a questionnaire to see how the kids liked the sessions and if they will use the tips I've taught.

 

Note: This event will be held at Merrick Post No. 1282, Amercian Legion, 160 Merrick Road, Merrick, NY 11566. Their will be five session in all, each session will be held on the a Sunday starting from September 22, 2013 and ending October 20, 2013. Session times are from 1:00 p.m.to 3:30 p.m.
