A Recipe for a Healthy Life

by Susan Eichhorn

As a member of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County since I was five years old, I am finally working to achieve the highest honor available in the Girl Scout community - the Gold Award. For my project, I will promote living to children age 6 to 12 a healthy lifestyle through education and fun activities and games. My goal is to teach children the benefits of eating healthy, exercising regularly through body-moving activities, and helping the environment through these simple lifestyle changes.

Obesity has been on the rise in our world, our country, and even, the small town of Merrick. As more fast food restaurants are being built, as more video games are being created, and as new electronic devices are being invented, children are rapidly living increasingly sedentary lives filled with unhealthy and environmentally-destructive habits.

My project consists of a five hour-long sessions filled with entertaining and simple ways for children to live healthy lifestyles and help the environment in the process.

In my first sessions, "Colorful Choices," I will teach children how to add more fruits and vegetables to their typical breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while also showing them a variety of healthy recipes that are easy to make and fun to enjoy. During my second session, "Reading Labels," I will show my audience easy ways to decide which snacks should be eaten and which ones have surprising ingredients that they might have already seen in their science classes. My third session, "Portion Size," will teach children how much they should really be eating of their favorite foods and effortless ways to remember these tips. By my fourth session, "Active Lifestyle," the children will get their bodies moving through several different games and learn how to continue exercising at home with exciting activities. Lastly, in my fifth and final session, "Helping the Environment and Your Body," I will demonstrate how all of my tips can be completed in simple steps that also help protect the environment.

If you or any children you know are interested in learning about living a healthy lifestyle or even just having a fun time through new games and activities, please join me for my five one-hour Sunday sessions on the following dates September 22nd, September 29th, October 6th, October 13th, and October 20th. Hope to see you there!
